What actually sets the price
- Size. The obvious one, and the biggest single factor. A courtyard and a half-acre block are different jobs.
- How long the grass is. A lawn that is three weeks past due takes longer, produces far more clippings and is harder on the machine than one on a regular round.
- How often you book. Regular work is almost always cheaper per visit, because the lawn never gets away and the job stays quick and predictable.
- Access. A wide side gate and a flat run is one thing. Carrying gear through a house, up steps or down a steep bank is another.
- Obstacles. Trampolines, garden beds, retaining walls, sprinkler heads and mature trees all mean more trimming by hand and less mowing in straight lines.
- Green waste. If clippings and prunings need to be carted away rather than binned, that adds cost — it is a tip run.
- Slope. A bank that has to be done with a push mower or a whipper snipper takes far longer than the same area flat.
One-off versus regular
A single visit to a yard that has not been touched in two months will always cost more than a fortnightly cut on the same lawn — sometimes considerably more, because it is really a clean-up job rather than a mow.
That is the main reason a regular round works out cheaper over a year even though you are paying more often. The grass never reaches the point where it becomes a big job.

Australian cost guides published in 2026 put a typical suburban mow somewhere in the region of $50 to $80 a visit, with hourly rates commonly quoted between $50 and $100. Larger blocks, badly overgrown yards and jobs with green waste removal sit above that.
Treat those as a sanity check on the market, not as a price for your yard. They are national averages across every kind of property.
Comparing two quotes fairly
The gap between two quotes is often not the price, it is what is in them. Before you compare, check each one includes:
- Edging along paths, driveways and garden beds.
- Whipper snipping around fences, posts, trees and anything the mower cannot reach.
- A blow-down of paths, driveway and patio at the end.
- What happens to the clippings.
A cheaper quote that covers the mow and nothing else is not cheaper. You will finish the job yourself with a broom.
